History

There has been a thriving Scout Troop in Ormskirk since 1909, just two years after Robert (later Lord) Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement in England in 1907.

In 1914, the Scouts were given exclusive use of large premises at 7 Wigan Road, which is still the home of the 1st Ormskirk Scout Group.

Scouting has grown so much since those early days that there are now over 400,000 young people in the UK experiencing the and opportunities for personal development and adventure that it provides, and over 28 million young people internationally, across 216 countries.

The various Sections cater for young people of all ages between 6 and 25:

Beaver Scouts 6 to 8 years
Cub Scouts 8 to 10½
Scouts 10½ to 14
Explorer Scouts 14 to 18
Network 18 to 25

These operate within the 20 Scout Groups and eight Explorer Scout Units currently active in Ormskirk and the surrounding District, stretching from Hesketh Bank to Aughton, from Banks to Appley Bridge and including Skelmersdale.  All of these Groups and Units are run by adult volunteers. Other adults have District and/or County roles – and meet up through the District Team meetings and the Scout Active Support unit (incorporating Fellowship and Crew). So, what do the adult volunteers get out of it?  Apart from friendship, fun and games, personal development and leadership experience, silly songs, campfires, backwoods cooking, creative projects, walking, climbing, rifle shooting, archery, pioneering, tracking, kayaking, canoeing, caving . . .

Since March 1999, Ormskirk District Scouts have had the benefit of a building in Lathom, originally built as a small theatre in the 1920s by the 3rd Earl of Lathom.  This had previously belonged to the Lathom Women’s Institute and they still regularly use the premises, as do various other local community groups.

Upkeep of this elderly building is increasingly problematic: Ormskirk and District Scouts are currently raising funds towards a new District Head Quarters.
