November already, where has the year gone……. In the latest Scouting Magazine – Cub Supplement, the question was asked “How many of us chat with our Cubs and ask them what games and activities have they enjoyed and would like to do again”? Try it….. you may be surprised at the answers. If you are contemplating doing the Scientist Badge, Rolls Royce have some good worksheets and experiments for you to download from www.scouts.org.uk/sponsors.

Orienteering, 17

th October – Tawd Vale

Cancelled and as Tawd Vale is now closed for the winter, means Peter and his brother can’t re organise for another date this year.

Swimming Gala, 14

th November

Information has been sent out, forms should be sent, along with £25 per group to Sue (DC). The swimming gala is always a very noisy, enjoyable event, so please encourage your Beaver and Scout sections, if you have them, to take

part. If you don’t have enough Cubs for every event, that’s fine, just enter what you can. Cubs must be 10 ½ or under on the day. Cubs taking part in the water polo must be under 9 on the day.

Chief Scout Silver Awards Night, 24

th November

Invitations will be posted to Groups (Cub Leader) for you to distribute to the relevant Cubs. If they are no longer in Scouting and you’re not able to contact them, can you let Linda know asap. Could you also, please ask parents to either ring or e mail Linda 01695 726995 / linkirby12@aol.com (subject Chief Scout Silver Awards) if they’ll be attending, plus numbers, so that we have an idea of how many to cater for. It will be the usual format, arrive 7.10pm for a 7.30pm start, with a light buffet after the awards ceremony, approx. finish 8.15pm. If you have any Cubs who wouldn’t mind saying a few words about the personal challenge part of their Promise Challenge, then get in touch with one of us. For Cubs who will only finish their challenges close to the Awards Night, they can have their CSSA badge presented along with their certificate onthe night, as long as we know about it.

Carols in the Park, 7

th December

As usual we will be collecting tins for West Lancs Food Bank and toys for the Women’s Refuge, this is open to all sections. Toys must be new and unwrapped please, the refuge would also welcome gifts for teenagers.

It was decided at the Planning Meeting in September, not to have a Christmas competition this year, as entries had to be in to early before Christmas. We’ll be doing a Spring or Easter competition instead.

Gathering – Bibby’s Farm, 18th – 20th September

Well we weren’t disappointed, full marks for another fantastic Gathering.
It was good to go back to Bibby’s Farm, we held the District camp there 2 years ago and it was amazing, to see just how the site had developed in such a short time. It was an excellent venue, they just need an on/off button for the motorway noise!! All the Cubs seemed to be having a whale of a time, lots of happy smiling faces and the weather didn’t let us down either… Thank you to everyone who volunteered or were ‘coerced’ into helping out with the Market Place on Saturday morning, we couldn’t have run it without you. To Mike, Ricko, Ash and team, many thanks for all your hard work over the past 4 years – you’ve done a fantastic job. Any feedback re the Market Place would be helpful for next year.

District Camp, Tawd Vale, 26th – 28th June 2009

The theme of the camp was Robin Hood, there was some wonderful sights to behold – Peter Hall (true to form) couldn’t resist getting his green tights out of mothballs….. and Paul Taylor made a wonderful Friar
Tuck…. the weather was perfect and it was great to see so many happy smiling faces over the weekend. 150 Cubs plus leaders took part in shooting, archery, canoeing, Robin’s cart race, crafts, backwoods cooking
the list goes on…

There are lots of thank you’s so here goes – to the Fellowship and Steph (9th) for setting up and manning the obstacle course, ‘Sergeant Major John Broady’ was excellent at putting the Cubs
through their paces!!! to David (46th) and Steve (42nd) who built the most fantastic camp fire ever and to everyone who ran bases or took charge of groups. Also to the two Ian’s (master chefs) for sorting out
lunches on Saturday and Sunday. It’s weekends like this that makes you realize what a fantastic privilege it is to be part of this game called Scouting….

Ceramic Painting

This is a fun and cheap activity that could be under taken by any section. There are ranges of items that can be painted, plates, mugs, egg cups, etc. We designed and painted mugs. This activity can be used as part of the craft proficiency badge. Some ideas for themes that where used by my scouts are names, pop groups, logos etc.

Time taken: approximately 1 hour.

Method

First give each scout a piece of paper that represents the circumference of the mug (half of an A4 in Landscape), ask them to draw and colour their design on it, making sure its not too detailed or difficult. This will give them an idea of scale and act as a guide for painting.
When you have approved their design and after the whole of the patrol is finished, issue them with a small amount of paint, water, paint brushes and a mixing palette.
Any mistakes can be removed with a damp cloth or kitchen roll.
Once they have finished they leave it to dry overnight. Then the mug must be put in an oven for 30 minutes at 170oC to ‘fix’ the paint. Let it cool down and the mug is ready to use ! (A copy of the final instruction was given to each scout to take home with his mug.)

Equipment

Newspaper to protect the working surface.
Design paper (half of an A4 in Landscape)
Pencils
Coloured pencils or pens
White mugs
Ceramic Paints – red, blue and yellow – can be obtained from Hobbycraft Preston or Rennies Bold St Liverpool. About £1.40 each.
Paint Brushes
Cloths or kitchen roll
Water containers
Mixing palettes. (we used paper plates for easy disposal)
Containers to put the paint into. (we used paper plates for easy disposal)

Swimming Gala 2008

Congratulations go to 4th Parbold and 41st Halsall, joint winners of the Cub Trophy and to 4th Parbold and 44th Tarleton, overall joint winners of the competition. There was the usual noise and enthusiasm, which makes this event what it is ‘GREAT’.

One of the lifeguards commented on what an enjoyable event it had been and that the Cubs and Scouts where a credit to us. You can’t ask more than that.
