  2. DESC VIII – Ormskirks Explorer Camp!

February 20, 2010 by Ash Green

It’s the 8th time around now for the District Explorer Scout Camp (DESC).  We’re back off to GT, with stacks of activities to do on the Saturday, some good ol’ socialising to be done on the Friday and Sunday, and a suprise full of wierdness on the Sunday.  These camps are normally the first time after the winter to get back under canvas, and they’re great for meeting other people both in your Unit and across the District.  We’re lining up some ace activities for you, so bob over to the downloads page on the website, and get your form in!

  3. Snow and Ice approaches

February 9, 2010 by Ash Green

Over 15 of Ormskirks Explorers and Scout Network are preparing to feel the cold up in the superb mountaineering region of Aviemore, hidden in the Cairngorm Mountains. Keep an eye out for news of their acheivements!

  4. Explorer Climbing Badge course

February 5, 2010 by Ash Green

Ash & the District climbing team are putting on a climbing course for Explorers.  The aim is to get the Climbing activity badge, but also you can use this for your D of E or Scout Platinum award as the physical section.

This course is being run for everyone, no matter what level of experience you are.  Climbing is a great activity which is non-competitive (you only compete against yourself!), and can take you to some stunning places.

Check the downloads section for details.

    November 8, 2009 by Les

The next District Leaders Meeting will be at the District HQ at 19.30 on Wednesday 17  18 November – whoops got the right day, but the wrong date.

The first part of the meeting will be held jointly with the District Scout Leaders meeting and will cover what helps with moving on from scouts to explorers, what barriers there are and how we can improve the process.

The scout shop will be open during the evening.

The agenda will be sent out a couple of days before the meeting.  If there is anything that you think needs to be on it, please send details to Margaret by Friday 13 November.

  10. Upcoming events

October 27, 2009 by Ash Green

Malaysia Presentation 4th NovemberMalaysia team shot

This is being held at Preston Uni and is to be run by the members of the County Trip to Malaysia this Summer.  A group of explorers headed out and spent several weeks working on community projects, playing with Elephants and Prime Ministers … really!  Check the detail at http://www.westlancashirescouts.org.uk/news/an-invitation , and bob down to see what you could be doing in a couple of years!

     Peak Meet 6/9 November

This is a weekend for anyone (leaders or Explorers) into Climbing.  It’s held at THE place to climb in the Peak District, so you’ll get to hear about the wonders of gritstone climbing.  This is one for people who’ve done a bit, but want to do more.  Check the flyer for more info : http://www.westlancashirescouts.org.uk/downloads/view/96

Snow and Ice Feb Half Term

Ok, it’s a while off, but the applications CLOSE in December, so get your applications in.  If you’ve not tried this before – why the hell not!?!  Grab your boots, a hat & sense of adventure and head to http://scouts.landactivities.com/snowice to sign up.

     Nepal 2010 – December

Plans are afoot to run a community project aimed at Explorers in December 2010.  Whilst on a trip to Nepal visiting the Everest region, some of our guys in the County found a run-down orphanage with some young kids that could really benefit from a hand.  Please have a look at the flyer on http://www.westlancashirescouts.org.uk/downloads/view/93 – we’ve never done anything quite like this before.  Fancy having a shufty at Everest and doing some trekking when not working on renovating an Orphanage?  Go look.  This isn’t a trip just for hyper-fit people with loads of money by the way!  All abilities can apply – you just need to register interest ; this doesn’t tie you in to anything.

     Red Rose 2010 – August

Red Rose camps are international events run by West Lancs.  We’ve got a BIG one going off next year, and we’d love for you to take part.  All information is on http://redrose.org.uk , but essentially it’s at Great Tower campsite in the Lakes, you get to meet loads of new friends (we’re working on a total camp size of 1500!), do loads of activities on site, off site, around the lakes and get stacks of entertainment in the evenings.  I’ve helped on 3 of these events over the years and I can say they’re certainly the most fun Camps that I’ve ever been on.  Why not take your unit for the summer?  All your programme is sorted out for you …. ?  Closing date is mid-November to get initial bookings in.  Leaders – can we tempt you? There’s a staff bar if that helps ;-)

Ardennes Adventure – Summer 1/2 term in May/June

Every year we run a trip for 10 days for Explorers out to the South of Belgium.  Packed with activities including caving, climbing, mountain biking and canoeing, you get all your training and equipment provided, and transport thrown into the mix.  The only thing you need to sort out is your food – and we’ll help you plan meals and translate Belgian into English.  This is an awesome opportunity for people aged 13.5-18 – we’ve taken older Scouts in the past as part of the Moving On process … I can’t recommend this enough.  Meet people that you’ll be friends with for many years to come – as an example, all of the Explorers and young Network that came on the East Greenland Expedition in 2007 had been on the Ardennes Trip and got ‘inspired’.  All the information is on http://ardennes.westlancashirescouts.org.uk – leaders can you please print a copy of the application form off and press into your Explorers’ hands please?

     District Explorer Scout Camp VIII

DESC 8 approaches – our event in the Lakes to kick the year off with a bang.  March 19-21st at GT.  Flyers out soon.
