The Biggest Ormskirk Scouts Gathering Camp Yet! ….and possibly the best!
Last weekend, 23rd-25th September 2016, saw 700 young people aged 6 – 18yrs, Leaders and Volunteers attend the annual Ormskirk District Scouts Gathering camp, which took place at Rock & River, Mawdesley, the perfect place to participate in various adventurous activities.
The camp was held so Scouts of all ages, from 6 to 18yrs, could experience adventure outdoors away from home and to have lots of fun with their friends learning new and exciting skills from many challenges.
The camp was attended by Groups from across Ormskirk District, and was one of the largest Gathering camps of recent years, with 707 enjoying the activities.
The weekend was action packed from the Friday night to the Sunday afternoon where the young people took part in a range of activities including Camp Fires, High Ropes, Zip Wire, Raft Building, Kayaks, Backwoods Cooking, Laser Tag, Climbing, Abseiling, Bungee Trampolines, Inflatables, Science Experiments and other games.
To coincide with the Olympics, Saturday night saw the camping field being transformed into an International Marketplace, where Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers could travel the world in 80 minutes, as each Group laid on activities themed around their chosen country.
We had Fondue tasting in Switzerland, Bush Tucker Trials of crickets and mealworms in Australia, to Carnival Masks in Brazil, along with many others.
The field was a hive of activity, with the many flags, costumes, music, and laughter, which was enjoyed by all.
One Volunteer was in awe of the event, and said they felt that it had been the best camp they had been on, whilst a Leader commented that their Beavers, Cubs and Scouts had had an amazing time, with each one of them trying something new.
Creating opportunities for young people to challenge themselves, try new things, develop social skills, independence and form friendships is central to scouting philosophy and has long term positive impact on young people lives. The success of this years’ Ormskirk District Scouts Gathering camp, will no doubt have given these opportunities to many of our young people, who will have grown in their development over the weekend. After reaching the top of the 45ft Climbing Tower, and abseiling back down, one Beaver said “I was a bit scared at first, and didn’t think I would be able to do it, but it was brilliant”.
Our next District Camp will take place in Kandersteg, Switzerland in Summer 2017, and whilst not everyone can make it, we know that there’ll be plenty more fun, challenge and adventure!
